The client for this project is Art Series Hotel, which sits under the larger hospitality company Accor. The building I will be designing for is a boutique style hotel, planned to be built in Freemantle, Western Australia. The spaces I have been chosen to design include: the main entrance & reception; which has a minimum seating requirement of 10 guests, a small bar & hospitality facility; with bar seating for up 20 people, a relevant number of bathrooms – including accessible facilities, and a minimum of 3 room designs which can be repeated from floor to floor. The time designated for the completion of the project is approximately 12 weeks.

The main theme and aesthetic of The Art Series Hotels is that they are an contemporary artist driven immersive experience packaged into a sleek and polished boutique style hotel. Each hotel is specifically designed with the intention of showcasing and preserving a design concept which represents the chosen artist’s work and style. The art is typically displayed in the form of hung paintings, however a few of the hotels have tried to go beyond. Some examples of this would be, The Cullen in Melbourne, where art has been etched into the glass wall which divides the bathroom and the bedroom, and the Adnate Perth, which is the first hotel to feature a large scale art work as a part of the building exterior facade. The hotels often feature a sleek reception area which is where you gather your first impressions of the art and artist, a nearby restaurant, bar or pool to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring the city, and most of the hotels are able to offer accessible rooms for individuals with mobility challenges.

The main aesthetic change I wanted to make in this project is to bring more texture to the space as well as the colour. Even though Art Series hotels already use colour and texture, I want to use them both more boldly and effectively. For example, when it comes to wall and floor finishings I would want them to be inspired by both the colours and textures represented in the art, so that it flows more like a continuation of it rather than in stark contrast.
